Contacting Brazilian Ambassador: Do Not Cancel Live Earth Concert (Brent Budowsky)
A lower court in Brazil has decided to cancel the Live Earth Concert in Rio because 700,000 Brazilians are planning to attend and the court believes the government of Brazil cannot ensure the safety of the attendees.
This morning I am writing to the Brazilian ambassador to the U.S. urging that the concert proceed. Surely the government of Brazil is very capable of making security arrangements for an event that was long planned.
I am urging concerned Americans to contact the Brazilian Embassy in Washington in support of this concert. For those who do, please be respectful, professional and courteous, but make it clear that Brazil should always act as one of the world's greatest democracies, and a friend to America and those who act to protect the earth.
I am also contacting representatives of several Democratic presidential candidates and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), urging them to speak out as well.
Live Earth embodies a worldwide union of good and decent people who care deeply about the future of the planet, and we in America stand side by side with our friends in Brazil.

They are canceling the concert for the wrong reasons. They should be canceling it under their consumer protection laws. The perpetration of the myth about global warming is a massive consumer fraud and one can only wonder when the class action lawsuits will come against Gore and company.
Comment by Robert Rosencrans — July 5, 2007 @ 11:04 am
No doubt the Bush/Rove/Cheney are working behind the scenes to have this event scuttled.
God forbid a gigantic event that is designed to benefit the health and well being of the global ecosystem. That would undermine their exploitation of fossil fuels while boosting the stature of environmentalists and global warming statesmen like Al Gore.
The right-wing will do anything to stifle that.

On the other hand, Andy, it could be that the Brazilian police have enough problems that they aren't sufficient to the task.
Comment by Dan Collins — July 5, 2007 @ 3:45 pm
Dan- that's typical right-wing rationalization. Give a lame excuse and see if the plausability of it sticks or is parroted by the right-wing noise machine until nobody cares.
Besides, the peace and tree-hugging crowd really aren't rowdy. Yet our country (the neocons controlling our country that is) considers them subversive and instigates phony confrontations.
But hey, why not prognosticate on how very, very, very difficult it would be for people to converge in a peaceful earth rally. What a horror.

I wonder how the Brazilian police manage to secure Mardi Gras, which attracts more than 700k, or so the media has led me to believe?
Come on, Brazil. What a cop out?

In the early 80s over a million people showed up in Rio for a Police concert — no problems there. What's so different now?

"No doubt the Bush/Rove/Cheney are working behind the scenes to have this event scuttled."
No doubt whatsoever. They're also the ones who turned on all the lights and appliances at Gore's house and ran up his electric bill!

"Besides, the peace and tree-hugging crowd really aren't rowdy".
Really? Hmmm! Environmental terrorists, Green"peace", PETA, and G8 "peace activists.

"Since the late 1990s in addition to peaceful demonstrations violent clashes between the police and radical protesters have become increasingly frequent. The media dubbed the confrontations which took place between the police and violent activists in 1999 the "Battle of Seattle". However, contrary to what most people believe the protests in Seattle were directed against a meeting of the World Trade Organisation rather than the G8 directly." (more where this came from)
Yeh! They're nothing to worry about…

Brent-
Have been listening to and appreciating your comments and ideas for the last few weeks now. Especially like your idea of a "soldier bond". Unfortunately sensible patriotic ideas don't seem to get much traction nowadays, but I think you are right on the money. Here's another idea which I hope you can promote: in listening to Thom Hartmann today a caller phoned in to point out that section 3.3 of the Constitution gives the Congress, and only the Congress, the right to try people for treason. If Bush & Cheney were complicit, as I and many believe they were, in outing Valerie Plame, then the pardon of Libby should be investigated as part of a criminal conspiracy. It is imperative to do this right away in order to remove these war criminals from office before they can pardon themselves as you have suggested. Please pressure the people you know to bring this about. Thanks for your thoughts and energy.

What's the easiest way to reduce energy usage (stage lights, anyone?) and garbage? Cancel all Live Earth Concerts. Just listen to Arctic Monkeys. It's obvious to even to young rock musicians.
Comment by Igor R. — July 5, 2007 @ 10:08 pm
Any large scale expressions of opposition to war and destruction of the environment would be so embarrassing to the flag wavers promoting their blood money that they cannot be held anymore. Demonstrations are increasingly disrupted, made illegal, halted, marginalized behind fences, and attacked by agent provocateurs to keep the people from realizing their destiny.
The planet is going down to Bush's nuclear industry and its pollution which will only aggravate global warming while permanently ruining the biosphere. We should be going with 100% renewable energy and sustainable systems. These messages could all be renewably powered and if we did not waste so much petroleum on war and permanent bases and toys, there would be some left for peaceful people to enjoy. Our lives could be joyous without the industrial propaganda and misleadership.
