Ted Olson for Attorney General (Lanny Davis)
I believe Ted Olson would be an excellent choice for attorney general.
Before I undermine any chance he might have by letting Rush Limbaugh or other Republican conservatives disqualify him because I endorsed him (or infuriate my fellow liberal Democrats by my endorsement), let me add:
I strongly disagree with most of Ted Olson’s political and philosophical positions. > Read More

What's This The Bad Judgment of Gen. David Petraeus (Brent Budowsky)
Gen. David Petraeus is a good man and a great soldier with a track record of almost complete failure in his previous tours of duty in Iraq.
Let this be said up front: While the president and Petraeus maneuver for him to testify on the anniversary of Sept. 11, the Speaker and majority leader should hold firm and say that this matter is not subject to discussion and the general will not testify on this date.
The fact that Petraeus would allow himself to be used in this attempt at shameful exploitation of the one day on our calendar that should be above exploitation, speaks for itself. > Read More

What's This Branch Out (Bob Franken)
It’s good to see Fred Thompson is being true to form. He’s waiting till the day AFTER the next Republican debate. Only then will he make it official, finally, that he’s running for president. For real.
That way, he can avoid any unscripted questions from reporters and those pesky other candidates.
Instead, he will be appearing on Jay Leno’s show where he can play his favorite sport, “puffball.”
Speaking of scripted, the biggest question is, What does NBC do with all those “Law and Order” episodes with DA Arthur Branch? > Read More

Going, Going … (Frank Donatelli)
National Republicans are bringing pressure to bear on Sen. Larry Craig to resign his seat. The speed with which individual senators have reacted is stunning. A number of senators have even suggested that the Senate Ethics Committee launch its own investigation of Craig’s conduct. Why are Republicans moving so quickly?
First, the senator already pleaded guilty and that plea, freely entered into, is unlikely to be vacated. If it somehow is, how anxious are Republicans to have details of the incident replayed nightly in a highly publicized trial? > Read More

What's This Opportunity Costs (John Feehery)
According to an extraordinarily small story in The Washington Post, the FEC fined Americans Coming Together, a group financed by George Soros and labor organizations, $775,000 for illegal campaign activities.
I am not one to believe in conspiracy theories, but sometimes you have to wonder.
ACT broke the law. They coordinated their campaign activities. The FEC found that they used illegally raised money to fund political ads, telemarketing and door-to-door canvassing. > Read More

What's This Straight and Narrow-minded (Bob Franken)
Back in the old days, didn’t “Red state” used to mean a communist country? Well, times have changed. Now the term has moved from left to right. Now it means conservative … gay-fearing conservative.
So in scarlet-red Idaho, you won’t get very far in GOP politics, just about the state’s only politics, if you’re gay. By the way, didn’t “gay” used to mean happy? It sure as hell doesn’t now. You won’t be at all happy in the Republican circles if you’re anything but a straight arrow, so to speak. And don’t give me Log Cabin Republicans. They’re not very happy. They’re gay. > Read More

What's This When Fox News Republicans Lie, Democrats Should Tell The Truth (Brent Budowsky)
Regarding Karen Hanretty’s comments in which she invoked the name of Barry Goldwater while she lied about me:
I knew Barry Goldwater. Barry Goldwater was an authentic conservative who believed in political discourse of honesty and civility. Hanretty is no Barry Goldwater. Nor is the Republican attorney who invoked Goldwater’s name in defense of perjury and support of pardons regarding the unpatriotic leaking of the covert identity of a CIA officer, which are acts that Barry Goldwater would hold in extreme contempt, were he with us today. > Read More

What's This Summer of Scandal (Ron Christie)
Listening in to one of the cable outlets this morning I heard one of the anchors proclaim this is the “Summer of Scandal” for the Republican Party. Cue the music: Larry Craig? Bad. Ted Stevens? Bad. David Vitter? You get the idea.
What I found particularly irritating with this sensational coverage is the fact that two scandalous issues have unfolded TODAY and yet the media makes scant reference. Could this have anything to do with the fact that the focus of these two scandals involves Democrats? > Read More
