Al Gore: Leader of the Courage Wing of the Democratic Party (Brent Budowsky)

@ 2:07 pm

While the Democratic fear caucus in Congress grows with progressively more embarrassing surrenders to executive abuse, and Hillary Clinton now debates herself about whether a presidential candidate should ever renounce first use of nuclear weapons, which she was for before she was against, Al Gore is the leader of the courage wing of the Democratic Party.

The true choice in 2008 is Bushism versus Goreism. Bushism is the complex of policies that promote massive profiteering and tax avoidance by the oil sector, destruction of the environment that follows from an economy addicted to oil, unwise wars inexorably tied to the oil fields of Arabia, massive campaign donations from oil profiteers to Republican candidates, and an infrastructure of secrecy, fear and deceit necessary to support policies that would be rejected in open and honest debate.

Goreism is a pro-American energy policy that promotes safer and renewable sources; the protection of the planet that inevitably follows from those safer energy sources; avoidance of unwise wars and the use of diplomacy to avoid them when possible; integrity and truth in public debate; a reduction of the corrupting influence of money in politics, and respect for the rule of law and constitutional Americanism.

Bush embodies the exploitation of fear; many Democrats embody their own fears in their repeated surrenders to fear. Al Gore embodies the politics of courage, the clarity of conviction.

Begin with Bush’s premise, we end with Bush’s tactics, policies, unwise wars, corruptions, and abuses of constitutional rights while the planet is polluted. Begin with Gore’s premise, we end with honest public debate, political reform, less pressure for unwise wars, far more equitable distribution of wealth, far more respect for the rule of law, while the planet is protected.

With Bush, there is a synergy between lying and misrepresenting intelligence to promote war, lying to buy science to fraudulently deny the risks of global warming, and pressure to censor administration science that is based on truth.

With Gore, there is a synergy between telling the truth to educate the world about global warming and knowing the truth about why we should have avoided a disastrous war in Iraq.

This is a clash of civilizations, a war of the worlds, between the world of Bush and the world of Gore, between competing visions of America, competing aspirations for the Earth, competing ideals of integrity in politics, competing values of reason versus ideology and delusion, competing visions between reverence for the Constitution and the rule of law versus contempt for American traditions that were previously accepted with near universal consensus since Jefferson put pen to paper.

Democrats in Washington should close down the fear and surrender caucus in the Capitol, listen to what Gore is saying, and do what Gore is doing.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.

  1. OH YES! Excellent article and well said Mr. Budowsky. I agree with everything you said.

  2. Al Gore, an ALREADY rich man, flies all over the world in massively polluting jets (sometimes even private jets) so he can make himself richer.

Gore makes $100,000 - $175,000 for a 75-minute "multimedia presentation" about global warming. NOTHING that Al Gore says couldn't be put on a website, negating any real reason for him to travel and pollute so much.

The reason Gore travels and pollutes is to make money.

Gore has positioned himself to profit handsomely off this farce called Global Warming.

Ooooh, the earth has warmed by 0.6 degrees Celsius in 100 years! That's not a very big amount, you know.

Al Gore proves: there is a sucker born every minute.

Don't forget Al Gore's 3 mansions, one of which uses 20 times the amount of electricity as the average home!

Al Gore pollutes enough for 100 men or more.

  3. I think the science to support global warming isn't on firm footing yet:

This is actually raw, re-crunched data from NASA. Now magically 1998 isn't the hottest year on record, it's actually 1934!

    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.D.txt

In fact, now four of the top 10 are from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well down to behind even 1900.

Idealism and noble goals are fine, but the science also has to add up.

Avoidance of unwise wars is also fine, but avoidance of all wars when you are attacked is defeatism. I know, I know it wasn't Saddam Hussein, but I'll skip the long argument this time.

And nuclear energy with full waste reprocessing will be the answer sooner or later. Face it, 5 billion years from now the Sun will collapsed so we are all doomed anyway, and non-shale oil will run out very soon no matter what we do, but in terms of foreseeable human history, with nuclear and coal-based synfuels we can be set for a few hundred years.

  4. As Gore himself said this week in Singapore, "There is no single candidate that is putting forward a comprehensive argument about the environment or making climate change a priority."

  5. Maybe useful for the libbies to read:

If any of you still feel that this war on terror is a mistake, here is an
opinion from a very unexpected source. It's fascinating that this should
come out of Europe. Mathias Dapfner, Chief Executive of the huge German
publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in DIE WELT
(The World) , Germany's largest daily paper, against the timid reaction of
Europe in the face of the Islamic threat.

This is a must-read for all Americans. History may well verify its correctness.

EUROPE - THY NAME IS COWARDICE
(Commentary by Mathias Dapfner CEO, Axel Springer, AG)

A few days ago Henry Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe - your family
name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because
    it's so terribly true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives, as England a nd
France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they
noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements.

Appeasement legitimized and stabilized Communism in the Soviet Union, then
East Germany, then all the rest of Eastern Europe, where for decades,
inhuman suppressive, murderous governments were glorified as the
ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.

Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo, and even
though we had absolute proof of ongoing mass-murder, we Europeans debated
and debated and debated, and were still debating when finally the Americans
had to come from halfway around the world, into Europe yet again, and do our
    work for us.

Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European Appeasement,
camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide
bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Pales tinians.

Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore nearly
500,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by
the self-righteousness of the peace movement, has the gall to issue bad
grades to George Bush… Even as it is uncovered that the loudest critics
of the American action in Iraq made illicit billions, no, TENS of billions,
in the corrupt U.N. Oil-for-Food program.

And now we are faced with a particularly grotesque form of appeasement. How
is Germany reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic Fundamentalists in
Holland and elsewhere? By suggesting that we really should have a "Muslim
    Holiday" in Germany?

I wish I were joking, but I am not. A substantial fraction of our (German)
Government, and if the polls are to be believed, the German people, actually
believe that creating an Official State "Muslim Holiday" will somehow spare
us from the wrath of the fanatical Islamists. One cannot help but recall
Britain's Neville Chamberlain waving the laughable treaty signed by Adolph
Hitler and declaring European "Peace in our time".

What else has to happen before the European public and its political
leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially
perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims,
focused on civilians, directed against our free, open Western societies, and
intent upon Western Civilization's utter destruction.

It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than any of the great
military conflicts of the last century - a conflict conducted by an enemy
that cannot be tamed by "tolerance" and "accommodation" but is actually
spurred on by such gestures, which have proven to be, and will always be
taken by the Islamists for signs of weakness. Only two recent American
Presidents had the courage needed for Anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush.

His American critics may quibble over the details, but we Europeans know the
truth. We saw it first hand: Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War, freeing half
of the German people from nearly 50 years of terror and virtual slavery.
And Bush, supported only by the Social Democrat Blair, acting on moral
conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic War against Democracy. His
place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have
    passed.

In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the
multicultural corner, instead of defending liberal society's values and
being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true
    great powers, America and China.

On the contrary - we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to those
"arrogant Americans", as the World Champions of "tolerance", which even
(Germany's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes. Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic, so
    devoid of a moral compass.

For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of
additional national debt, and a massive and persistent burden on the
American economy - because unlike almost all of Europe, Bush realizes what
is at stake - literally everything.

While we criticize the "capitalistic robber barons" of America because they
seem too sure of their priorities, we timidly defend our Social Welfare
systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive! We'd rather discuss
reducing our 35-hour workweek or our dental coverage, or our 4 weeks of paid
vacation… Or listen to TV pastors preach about the need to "reach out to
    terrorists. To understand and forgive."

These days, Europe reminds me of an old woman who, with shaking hands,
frantically hides her last pieces of jewelry when she notices a robber
breaking into a neighb or's house.

    Appeasement?

    Europe, thy name is Cowardice.

  11. First off, Gore purchases carbon credits to offset the carbon footprint that he is creating when traveling. Gore would not be stupid enough to be so visibly hypocritical in promoting conservation. And also, since it seems more likely every day that Gore will not be running, I doubt that he would go to the trouble to pay Brent to write these things. Most likely, Brent is so inspired by the courage and boldness of Al Gore that he so desperately wants him to enter the race and win. I have to admit, Brent may a little delusional in thinking that Gore will run, but it never hurts to dream.

  12. Holy shit, some of these comments are literally mind-blowing!

Those who deny the mountain of scientific evidence showing a human contribution to global warming are in the same league as holacaust deniers. They have a political agenda, and they will twist facts and their own minds to fit around it.

And concerning fighting terrorism, let it be said for the gazillionth time that terrorism is a particular method of warfare carried out by people for a variety of reasons. It is not an ideology, nation, religion or people. I know of no one who does not support fighting terrorists who have harmed us or might harm us in the future. But going to war against a country that was not a source of terrorists is surely not the way to accomplish this goal and is, in fact, counterproductive. Perhaps the war lovers amongst us simply missed the consensus report from the United States intelligence community stating that the War in Iraq has actually increased the risk of terrorist acts against the US. Or perhaps the war lovers are immune to facts, just like the global warming deniers.

  15. Way to go Brent–appreciate the insight.

Find the comments a bit depressing–the spewers of GOP/FOX talking points seem to outnumber all others.

A lot of them seem to think Gore and anyone else concerned about global warming should stop flying and immediately turn off all their lights and appliances–that might be convenient because no-one would have to listen to them–ignorance would then be bliss for these people, for a while, until the really bad stuff started happening.

"By the way Brent. The Website Junkscience.com is offering $100,000 to anyone who can prove that mankind has contributed to global warming. If you collect on that money using Gorenology let me know."

Mr Rosencrans, I went to Junkscience.com–no word about who funds it, other than the usual paypal solicitations from generous readers (like yourself possibly).

I liked it when Steve Millroy billed himself as "a junk science expert". Excellent double meaning! Which one is right I wonder?

I did find it interesting that they claimed to be a "hot pick" in Science Magazine. That implies real credibility, so I looked them up in Science

"Page of contempt. Self-appointed bad science debunker Steve Milloy skewers studies on everything from the risks of diet drugs to global warming on The Junk Science Home Page (http://www.junkscience.com). Although Milloy's acerbic wit makes some researchers' blood boil, others find many of his points valid–or at least entertaining."

Going into other countries to control their resources, and building military bases on their holy sites, does not exactly make for a peaceful world. I don't give a rats ass if Al Gore is making money. Under Bush, the only consistent strand is his complete dedication to maintaining the hegemony of the fossil fuel industry. The price of the Iraq disaster alone would have converted the US economy to Renewable Energy and Energy Autonomy several times over. What is truly remarkable though is the sheer foolishness of the global warming deniers. To whit: America has no oil. It relies on and coddles some of the most repulsive regimes on the planet in order to sustain its energy needs. It has become a welfare state, not in providing welfare for its citizens but in requiring welfare assistance from other nations in order to bail out its faltering economy. It has undoubtedly vast wealth and power but instead of using its position to lead the world out of the oil age, it tries to bully everyone into a state of fear and denial. It claims to promote democracy while mocking and subverting it.

  41. To post #3:

"This is actually raw, re-crunched data from NASA. Now magically 1998 isn’t the hottest year on record, it’s actually 1934! …"

Either this guy is a complete idiot, is knowingly lying.

My bet is on idiot, otherwise he would not have left a link - go to the website he lists, and you will see that he is discussing the surface temperature of the (continental) US only.

    Graphs from the same website

    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/

clearly show the increase the earths surface temperature.

What part about "global warming" do you not understand? "Global" or "warming?" The US is not the entire earth!

However, I appreciate #3 demonstration of a larger problem in America - what could go under the broad banner of "uneducated / ignorant." When people are able to find data on NASA, but not read the title of the chart, there is a serious problem … especially when these people find fit to post their ignorance on a website for all to see …

I'm posting this so that people don't read post #3, and fall to into another cycle of FUD, which seems to me the main tool of the those who want to deny reality.

Another note to #3, maybe this is some of the confusion. Science is not "magic."

Some people have a deep-seated fear of science; if they really looked at things scientifically, their whole world (and heaven) view would crumble.
After all, their are many on the right who are gleeful that the world is in all the turmoil we see. For them it means that the lord will soon be here to take them away in the rapture. Oil is running down our gutters, rats infest our cities, farmland is totally polluted, the sky is falling and all because of President Bush and the oil companies that produce the gasoline that runs your cars' engines. Any fool can look around and see that there is not a dimes difference in environment today versus 10, 15, 20 years ago. Actually, overall environment is better than under Mr Clinton, for example. You left wing, socialism loving, liberals just don't get it. Just because you live your lives in fear, have no confidence in the individual's ability to solve problems, and deep down dislike your country should not change our views. Get a life, get a room, get a therapist.

  46. Col TKN; Put down the crack pipe and back away slowly. Son, you are dazed and confused. How is the weather there in your parallel, alternate, neocon universe?

TKN, what part of the environment has improved? Please provide us with some more crazy-talk for the sake of entertainment.

  47. I'd be a fool to bother, Gildenstern.

  48. We really need to elect someone of his international prestige so that the damage done by this administration can be undone. However, I think it imperative that he wait in the wings to surface as a unifier and for emergency purposes, having lived through 1968 myself.

  49. TKN you are sooo cynical. You must be a speechwriter for W. None of your perjorative terms matches the hope Americans have for a change of administration. What do you think? Do you think W personifies the best we can do, the best we can hope for, the best to represent us. Nay amigo?
