Well, Gingirch Didn't Last Long (Hugo Gurdon)
After only a day on the site, the latest Quick Poll! has had to be taken down. Yesterday I asked whether Newt Gingrich would run in the presidential race. Today (Saturday) Gingrich's spokesman told the Associated Press that the former Speaker would not be a candidate. He made the decision after discovering that forming an exploratory committee would compromise the tax-exempt status of his political organization, American Solutions. Those who voted in the poll got it right, but only just, voting 54% to 46% that Gingrich would not hit the White House trail.

What's This Bill Kristol — Really? (A.B. Stoddard)
Bill Kristol is out today with a notable rose-colored prediction. As loyal readers may remember, I am a fan of Kristol, yet his rose-colored prediction for Iraq did not bear fruit. And when he wrote in The Washington Post back in July that the Bush presidency "will probably be a successful one," I began to wonder just what he is thinking. > Read More

What's This On SCHIP (John Feehery)
Reauthorizing the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) has proven more complicated than it should have been. Started by a Republican Congress more than a decade ago, Congressional Democrats have made the program their own with a plan to rapidly expand its size and scope.
The first battle in the war over fiscal responsibility this fall will be fought over SCHIP terrain, a battlefield not particularly friendly to the Republican position. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has already taken to calling the president and his allies anti-children, demagoguery that is completely effective in the short term. Bush’s retort that this expansion is the first step to government-run healthcare appeals to a small band of ideological purists, but largely fails to convince the public at large. > Read More

What's This Jim Webb for Vice President Today, and President Tomorrow (Brent Budowsky)
Every so often in Washington a figure rises who is exceptional, extraordinary and destined for great things. Many in the Congress and national politics have great acts but beneath the surface are more of the same, with better wrapping. Others are special. Jim Webb is very special.
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) is not only a military hero, but one of the truly great heroes of the American military. This is no exaggeration. > Read More

What's This Air Travel Unraveled (Bob Franken)
OK, fellow travelers. We have President Bush on board. Or we will pretty soon.
Apparently realizing that it's not all that long before he'll have to fly commercial again, the president announced that he's aware there is a problem in the unfriendly skies (and the terminals and tarmacs) that somebody has to do something about. Or at least study.
Of course, there's a big row about which somebody. The airlines insist that this is not their fault, and that limiting the number of flights that cause impossible gridlock during rush hour is not the answer. It's the traffic cops, the controllers and a system that is too obsolete to handle the bumper-to-bumper — make that wing-to-wing — traffic. > Read More

What's This Big Gain for Hillary in Poll (Dick Morris)
The latest Fox News poll shows a big gain for Hillary in a trial match-up with Rudy Giuliani. In the current poll, taken on Sept. 26, Hillary leads by eight points, 46-39. This compares with a previous lead of only five points in July and a deficit of three points in June: > Read More

You Disagree With Senate Vote Condemning MoveOn (Hugo Gurdon)
By a massive margin (86%-14%) you thought the Senate was wrong to condemn MoveOn.org for its advertisement referring to Gen. David Petraeus as Gen. Betray Us. Perhaps a lot of you agree with MoveOn's damning assessment. But maybe you merely thought the vote was a waste of Senate time. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said he chose not to vote because he did not want to engage in such gesture politics. Some skeptics thought, rather, that by skipping the vote the presidential candidate was, himself, engaged in a piece of political calculation rather than registering a principled objection.

What's This Flying Low (Bob Franken)
What single sentence do you hear more than any other in the airport these days? That's easy: "Watch out when you go to the men's room." I'm tempted to say it's the hands-down winner, but I have my pride, you know.
Of course, anybody who flies anymore has had just about all his or her pride stripped away. Overheard nearly as much is "Damn. I'm going to miss my connection." And of course there's "I despise the airlines!!!" — although that might actually be No. 1. > Read More

What's This The Challenge for the GOP (John Feehery)
This is not a newsflash, but it needs to be said. Republicans are in big trouble, and they need to get their act together soon.
Our troubles stem not just from spending, as some would suggest. It’s not just about scandal. Not just the war. Not just competence, although our lack of competence as a governing party has been stunning, frustrating and dispiriting.
We had an opportunity to completely remake the government, to make it adapt to 21st century realities. And we didn’t do it. We ran the same government pretty much the same way as the Democrats did, only with a little less of the demagogic flair that characterized the 40-year reign of House Democrats. > Read More
