Candidate Huckabee: Mastering the New Format (A.B. Stoddard)

@ 1:49 pm

Let's admit it, the YouTube debates are a strange experience. I find myself on edge, worried as the candidates take questions from snowmen, people hugging guns or wearing strange costumes. Why? Because the questioners tend to be more hostile, more hostile than a moderator would be and more hostile than a hostile audience member who is looking the candidate in the eye. > Read More

The Stakes Keep Getting Higher (John Feehery)

@ 1:03 pm

In the Sudan, Muslim extremists have thrown a schoolteacher in prison because her students named a teddy bear Mohammed.

In Russia, dictator-for-life Vladimir Putin has thrown his biggest opponents in jail on the eve of an election that can only be seen as illegitimate.

In Venezuela, el Presidente Chavez, who earned the eternal thanks of the Kennedy clan for donating heating oil to folks in the Northeast, is continuing on his quest to stamp out democracy. > Read More

Sen. Clinton's White House Experience (Ron Christie)

@ 11:33 am

In recent days, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has boasted of her eight years of experience during the presidency of her husband. There’s no question that she had strong influence with her husband and that she met with world leaders and scores of politicians.

My antennae went up, however, when I heard Sen. Clinton tout her eight years of experience in the White House, a clear dig at her Senate colleague and competition for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.). > Read More

The Hard-Work Recovery Program (Bob Franken)

@ 10:52 am

It's time to get real. Let's ignore the politicians with their nibble-around-the-edges happy-talk "solutions" to our biggest problems, and let's talk about what it will actually take to solve them.

Why start with illegal immigration and try to ignore the bigoted hang-'em-high shamefulness of the Republican candidates? Maybe one answer is that employers need to offer wages that will attract citizens and others who are here legally. What they do now is fatten their profits by paying substandard amounts to undocumented laborers who are so desperate to stay hidden they'll accept any pittance they can get. Maybe by doing away with this shadow economy, the jobs that cause so many to sneak across the border will not be waiting for them. > Read More

Just Asking: Top 10 Things I (Sometimes) Think About (Frank Donatelli)

@ 10:35 am

10. Shouldn’t all defenders of life express enormous gratitude to former Rep. Henry Hyde, who died last week after a long and distinguished congressional career?
9. How many innocent lives did Rep. Hyde save with his successful efforts to ban federal funding for abortions?
8. Did the Sudanese “moderates” win out when a court decided to sentence a British teacher to 15 days in jail rather than 40 lashes for “insulting Islam” for allowing her young students to name a teddy bear “Mohammed”? > Read More

Henry Hyde (John Feehery)

@ 7:17 am

Most people will remember Henry Hyde for his commitment to the unborn or for his role in the impeachment of Bill Clinton (a role he assumed with no great pleasure).

I remember Henry Hyde as simply the greatest orator of his generation.

Watching Hyde speak on the House floor was like watching Larry Bird play basketball or Tiger Woods play golf or Ted Williams swing a baseball bat. It was mesmerizing. > Read More

An Assault on Fairness (Brent Budowsky)

@ 4:24 pm

I will have a longer and more detailed response to the views expressed by my colleague here, A.B. Stoddard, about the Tucker Carlson issue.

For now, first, this past July 6 I wrote a post on this site discussing a letter I had written to the Board of Directors of General Electric about their political treatment on several cable shows that, in my view, disrespected large numbers of progressive Americans in ways that were highly disadvantageous from a media, content and ratings point of view to MSNBC. > Read More

In Praise of Tucker (A.B. Stoddard)

@ 2:01 pm

Earlier this week fellow blogger Brent Budowsky bagged on my friend Tucker Carlson in his post, upset because Tucker said Al Gore and George W. Bush have much in common and because he had shown contempt for Gore in his "sneering" comments. Budowsky's post, of course, invited the adolescent pile-on about Tucker, where readers called him everything from tool to weasel to twerp.  > Read More

Does Huckabee Have Enough of the Big Mo? (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 1:49 pm

Four weeks ago, voters in our Quick Poll! said Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) would win the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire. Call me naive, but I doubt that will happen.

On to Iowa — and the issue of whether former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas can win. He has surged in the polls, some of which suggest he has displaced former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts as the front runner in the GOP Hawkeye State. What do you think? Scroll down to our latest Quick Poll! and tell us where you think Huckabee will finish.

100,000 or More U.S. Troops in Iraq on Election Day (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 1:34 pm

We wanted you to assess the chances of a significant draw down of American forces in Iraq by the time voters go to the polls next November. We asked: "Will there be fewer than 100,000 US troops in Iraq on Election Day next year?" For a while, voting was fairly close, but in recent days, ballots have come in mostly to the No column. The end result — 67% of you saying there would be 100k or higher, and only 33% expecting big reductions.
