The White House (Armstrong Williams)

@ 2:08 pm

Sen. Barack Obama (D-N.Y.) put the nail in Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) bid for the White House last night with a resounding victory in North Carolina and drew even with her in Indiana.

Sen. Clinton assured the superdelegates and hierarchy of the Democratic Party that she would win Indiana by at least 8 percentage points and lose North Carolina by no more that 5 percent. In return, the party and delegates assured her that if these were the results, they would consider overturning Florida and Michigan in their late-May meeting with the rules committee and add new blood to her campaign.

Now we're told within hours Mrs. Clinton will again loan millions of dollars to her campaign, which is now in serious debt. She has lost the popular vote lead that was gained from her Pennsylvania victory.

Well, if you were listening to Clinton's speech last night, it sounded as if she were finally conceding defeat in this long-drawn-out Democratic primary. The body language of her husband and daughter also signaled the end to a bruising campaign.

If Sen. Obama chooses Clinton as his running mate in November, could you say that it's an unbeatable ticket? Is there anything that Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and the Republican machine can muster to avoid being steamrolled by the two hottest rock stars in American politics today?

We all know that substantive issues don't win elections, but it's the cultural issues that matter most. Would Obama/Clinton be too liberal for many states in this country and give McCain an added advantage in November? Will the millions of new voters registered during the campaign season by Democrats be the deciding factor on Election Day? Is the Clinton campaign right when they say another bombshell will drop about Sen. Obama in October that will lay to rest any bid that he has for the presidency? Am I dreaming that it's quite possible the Republicans can maintain the White house for another eight years? Who would have thought so six months ago?

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.

  1. No. He will not choose her as his running mate. Why would you choose someone who not only tried to destroy you. She made up in her mind if she didn;t win, she was going to make sure he was damaged so much that he wouldn't win. She had the nerve to think we wouldn't see through her tactics. Looks ike I'm the only one blogging today so that shows who the majority of the bloggers were for last night. LOL

  2. There are many in my family who are Republicans and plan to vote for Obama in November. The quickest way to change their minds is to put Clinton on the ticket. Clinton erases Obama's message of change and hope. She also brings an enormous amount of baggage to the ticket that Dems can do without. Obama is better served with a less polarizing figure on the ticket and someone that is reflective of his message.

  3. Armstrong;

Are you out of your ever loving mind! Hillary on the ticket with Obama is not going to happen. If she had conceded earlier without the rancor of the past few weeks, maybe but there is no way now and I applaud that decision. The repubs would come out in force if she was on the ticket, no thanks.

  4. I have confidence the O'Bomber will put McGovern to shame with or without Hillarita.

  5. I think it would be IRRESPONSIBLE to have Hillary on the ticket, when it was Bill Clinton who caused the Foreclosure Crisis by repealing the Glass-Steagall Act. Why is there NEVER any mention as to how this began. It began on November 12, 1999, when with the stroke of a pen, Clinton show utter disregard for hard-working Americans!!!

  7. Igor, is that the same confidence you expressed in regard to Fred Thompson's landslide primary victory?

  8. As Gergen said, Obama would have to employ food tasters, if Hillary Clinton were in the White House West Wing as Vice President. Never happen.

Half the country already despised Hillary, and now half the democrats despise her. Why on earth would Obama want her on the ticket?? He can get the vote of those Hillary haters. She can't get anything for him that he can't get for himself. The rest weren't going to vote for him anyway. Fuggedabout 'em.
    We're movin on.

  9. Misha, please do us a favor and not vote at all.

  10. Lester, are you trying to say that someone who has made an incorrect prediction should never make a prediction? All predictions in politics are conditional on a number of factors. You think if there is a war in Iran tomorrow or if McCain has a health scare, of if Michelle makes a particularly bizzarre speech all predictions will remain the same? Has anybody predicted last fall the current Hillary and Obama situation?

Like I said before, I predicted we will win in Iraq when every Democrats of note was saying the war is lost.

  11. I hope he does pick her. They will lose and the myth of the "Dream Team" will go down as a lesson learned. Gender and race are not important enough to carry a national election.
