Republicans Turn to Drugs (Bill Press)

@ 2:26 pm

Overshadowed by Hillary Clinton’s big win in West Virginia was a big victory for Democrats in Mississippi.

In Mississippi’s 1st congressional district, Democrat Travis Childers defeated Republican Greg Davis in a 62 percent Republican district that George W. Bush carried in 2004 with over 60 percent of the vote. And this transpired even though — or maybe because — Dick Cheney flew to Mississippi and spent election eve campaigning for the Republican candidate.

Poor Greg Davis. Campaigning with Cheney proved almost as dangerous as going hunting with him!

The Democratic victory in Mississippi doesn’t stand alone. This is the third special election held this year — all in Republican strongholds — and, under the leadership of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), Democrats have won all three. Which is, of course, a great omen for Democratic chances in November and which leaves Republicans tongue-tied.

After his party’s latest embarrassing defeat, House Republican Leader John Boehner (Ohio) explained: “The results in Mississippi should serve as a wake-up call to Republican candidates nationwide. As I’ve said before, this is a change election … Our presidential nominee, Sen. McCain, is an agent of change.”

Which is, almost word for word, how Boehner defended his loss in Louisiana, 10 days earlier: “The result this weekend in Louisiana’s 6th congressional district should serve as a wake-up call to Republican candidates across the country … Our presidential nominee, Sen. McCain, is an agent of change.”

How many “wake-up calls” does Boehner need before he gets the message? If there were any doubt Republicans are in complete disarray, they quickly erased it. Boehner and other House GOP leaders announced yesterday they’d adopted a new slogan for the 2008 campaign season: “The Change You Deserve.” There’s only one problem. It turns out that phrase is already a trademarked advertising slogan for the antidepressant drug Effexor.

Manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Effexor is prescribed for “depression, anxiety disorder, and panic disorder” among adults. In other words, it’s just what congressional Republicans need. Except they should be taking the drug, not selling it.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.

  1. I think we'll all be taking Effexor if Barack Hussain Obama becomes President!

  2. I think in order of Barack's middle name the drug of choice will be "Reparation H".

  3. Get a life, John Simmons. You sad racist troll.

  4. Unfortunately for Americans, Pres. Bush, McCain and the Republicans prefer to speak in half-truths and distortions of the truth, preferring not to find pertinent answers to the issues facing us today. They think finger-pointing and speaking in a loud voice will deflect the attention away from their failing policies — that we will forget that they fooled us before and that they will say and do anything to stay in power although their policies do noting to help the American people at large. Gas prices are higher than ever before, as is food, failing schools, bridges and roads, jobs which go overseas or job closings, billions of dollars going to a war which should have never been waged and those dollars do nothing to help the Iraqi people who are still suffering and have very little electricity and adequate sewer facilities or use of their own oil. We have record number of home foreclosures, medical bills which are going through the roof and thousands of people who have no health insurance at all. Every year Democratic Senators and Congressman have to fight to even get a decent minimum wage for American workers while Republicans continually give theirselves an annual wage hike, yet it is the American people who hire them to work for people and not the corporations they bail out time and time again. They pretend to be the Party of Family Values when they are really the party of special interest groups, corporations and greed! They care nothing for suffering families — college tuition has never been so high, barring thousands of young people from attaining a higher education and achieving the American dream. Their tax code, again, benefits the wealthy and leaves out the American family. They call themselves conservatives which is a nice way of saying they are selfish and like to conserve the wealth for themselves! They make fun of the word "liberalism" like it is a dirty word when we all know liberal means to give amply and generously, something they want not to happen preferring to keep all the wealth and goodtimes for themselves and their corporate buddies.

  5. I think your math is off a bit there Mr. John Simmons. That is unless of course, the "we'll all" you're talking about is that 28% that still think we're living in a robust ecomomy, Iraq is an overwhelming success, and that Bush will go down as the greatest President in history.

  6. Sorry PR, but I'm NOT a racist. The question is, why is Obama afraid of who he is? He's afraid to use his middle name, and for a long time in his life he was afraid to use his first name, calling himself "Barry" instead. I guess when you use pot and cocain on a regular basis you kind of forget who you really are.

  7. Thank you Bill Press for not ganging up on Hillary Clinton as many other pundits seem to be doing. I still remember in 1992 when you rolled around the Capitol lawn extolling that these military planes and soldiers "were ours now", that Bill Clinton was in office. Your enthusiasm was priceless.

Your editorial pissed off a conservative friend of mine but it game me a chuckle.

  8. Yes, Barry is afraid of his ears being discussed, he appeasement tendencies exposed, his associations, his Muslim education and being registered as a Muslim at school, his father's faith, his mothers politics. Other than the ears, he is afraid of any truth about himself, because in his case the truth always hurts.
