Fox News Attacks ‘Lesbian Air America Host’ (Brent Budowsky)
Even by the low standards of the Republican News Network, this morning's attack on Rachel Maddow, on the Fox News network, as a "lesbian Air America host" was a despicable new low. Those words, an open appeal to bigotry and hate, said by an alleged media analyst named Tim Graham, were met with laughter and chortles by the Fox News team on air. This is sick and despicable stuff, even for Fox News.
Here is a message to Barack Obama: You need to spend more time fighting back against the lies and smears of a Swift Boat campaign more ugly than the campaign against John Kerry, and less time having sweet-talk meetings with Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes followed by professorial discourse with Bill O'Reilly. This is war, Barack, and you had better fight back.
The sickness and dementia of a purported news network airing with smug laughs and happy chortles a naked appeal to hatred and bigotry in this attack on "a lesbian Air America host" is a low that even a Republican cable organization like Fox should never stoop to.
Let’s see if the "Fox Democrats," such as Lanny Davis, Howard Wolfson and Susan Estrich, have the strength of principle to stand against this. One of them recently wrote of how proud he was that both parties nominated four great candidates. Is this Fox Democrat proud they nominated Sarah Palin? Is this a Democrat, a real Democrat? A Democrat proud that Republicans nominated Sarah Palin? Huh?
Let’s see if Democrats can summon the steel and will and fight to answer this campaign of personal destruction and let’s see if Barack Obama can toughen up his game, and play NFL Super Bowl football.
In the meantime, Fox News should be ashamed and embarrassed that they allow their shows to be used to attack "a lesbian Air America host.”
Sick is sick. Despicable is despicable. And this is sick and despicable. And each and every Republican and Fox News Democrat should say it.

Surely you want facts in your news? I think everybody already guessed she was a lesbian anyway, and I doubt if she has much of an audience to worry about, carrying on in the best tradition of Olbermann. I didn't see you object when Sarah Palin was alluded to as "trailer park trash" on This Week.

Hi Brent
Objectivity. Objectivity. Objectivty.
I actually saw red last week when Obama went on O'Reilly's show the evening of McCain's most important night thus far. (I said to myself, Obama lacks decorum, and respect for the entire political process.)Coming from another perspective I was also exaspirated (but not surprised)with O'Reilly for succumbing to Obama for the sake of ratings and is weeny little ego. Then I drew from the objective side of my brain and chalked it all up to strategy.
MSNBC is practicing the art of "strategy" and doing so brilliantly by creating the Meadow's show to unify a female audience, a libral mal/female audience, a curious audience, a homosexual male and homosexual felmale audience on behalf of supporting Sen Obama. Meadows is bright and an excellent speaker.
This morning I did hear Fox referring to the new show. I have not heard Fox's slight on this, but if you perceived one was said, be objective enough that the disparaging remark was purely out of exaspiration not phobia. They probably fell in the ratings last night.
Are you implying Fox is insensitive to Lesbians? They have many staffers and a number of anchors that may differ.
Also, Brent. Don't confuse Obama by referring to the "election" as the "war".
: )

C'mon kids, what Fox did was sick stuff, and
even you guys should say it. Should I write
about certain very prominent Republicans who
are gay? You'd be surprised who some of them
are. Very high level today, and some who
were very high level during the Reagan years.
Names everyone would know. One who was in
fact nominated at a Republican convention for
one of the two highest offices in the land.
I could name them, but I wont, because even
in this sick business one has to have a little
integrity and class. I lose all respect for
Republicans whose partisanship is so sick and
total they cant even criticize Fox did this
morning. That is pathetic.
Comment by Brent — September 9, 2008 @ 10:36 am
Well Fox news is at it again. They will stoop to the lowest level to make news. Fox news has people working for them like Hannity who is the most negative person ever on TV and should not be allowed to fill the public with his nasty comments. Fox news will do anything to turn a head. Bill O'Reilly is a joke. Why people listen to Fox news is beyond me. Maddow is refreshing and has a positive outlook as well. As long as she stays this way she will be very popular and many will be anxious to listen to her. Whether she is gay or not has nothing to do with her ability to draw interest from her listeners. jojo

Great post Brent. You know, Obama won the nomination by staying on the 'high road,' and I doubt if he's going to get off of it now. He's relying on people to use their brains, unlike the republicans who are expecting people to believe lies. Obama even said if you're happy with the way things are, then you should vote for McCain. Fox news are a bunch of racist, bigoted, hypocrits, and the world knows it. Isn't is ironic that everything they are against that they are now for? Teenage pregnancy and unwed mothers were their banner of attack on 'the poor' people. The Republicans are just a bunch of sick people who sit around getting frustrated with themselves but taking it out on everybody else. Rachael is a winner. Republicans don't like winners. Now you're going to see women who really fight for women's issues come to the forefront. Racheal represents everything that men hate about women. Independence, Brillance, ans standing up for her Sexuality. Her choices are her own and she won't back down from anybody who wants to tackel her on issues. Palin on the other hand is everything a man loves. Speak when spoken to, and only say what you are told. Obama/Biden/Maddow/MSNBC 08

Brent, I agree with you, but this is what Fox is famous for. They are just getting worse and worse. And as for the Republican gays? now you know who runs the MSM. The Republicans are hypocrites, plain and simple.

Unless I missed something, I don't remember Sen. Larry Craig being nominated for VP position in the last 30 years. Who else could it be? Why go this route?
Don't you have anything good to say about Sen. Obama? Even one good thing, even if you had to pretend you are proud of your nominee? Even if you had to fake it, say one good thing about how you feel Obama's tax increases in a slow economy would stimulate its growth?
Comment by Misha — September 9, 2008 @ 11:11 am
Misha, I know. Why not talk about why the economy, no, the country is in the shape that it is in? Republicans want to 'turn the page' on their record of failure, only they are not turning the page on the people who made the failures
Comment by Yvonne — September 9, 2008 @ 11:38 am
The saddest thing about Fox news is the venom that comes out of their mouths is picked up by their children and the hate cycle continues. Hannity's America would definitely be a place where there would be no minorities, ever. Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians would be part of his 'final solution.'
Comment by Yvonne — September 9, 2008 @ 11:42 am
Gee, Misha. Larry Craig claims he's not gay. I take it I am to assume you have some personal knowledge otherwise?
I like Fox News. It's kinda like watching the Twilight Zone only dumber.
I, unlike my republican friends, don't assume most americans are lemmings unable to discern the truth.

What's new? Fox News caters to the bigots, it's their meat n potatoes. And Robert Rosencrans, Palin is trailer trash and a nutcase on top of that.
And the claim that McCain/Palin is the change ticket is even nuttier. But don't worry, the morans outnumber folks with brains in this country. You'll win.

Comment by Robert Rosencrans — September 9, 2008 @ 12:34 pm
Brent,
I'm not really a kid, I am of the generation that many in my group are not progressive thinkers and openminded as I.
I think you may forget how relentless the MSNBC Lefties were with outted politicians, as equal opportunists, let's not forget they recently called Hillary Clinton a PIMP for allowing her daughter to campaign. The leftie comics were also pretty abrasive while abusing outted celebs and politicians in the name of humor.
It is a petty conversation anyway.
We have kids in war right now.
Back to the real issues.
Since I have gone over to the McCain's side I see many holes in the Democratic world view.
McCain will lead us forward, not backward.
Comment by JFK-HRC — September 9, 2008 @ 12:36 pm
The same network that has Shepard Smith as an anchor has the nerve to make comments about the sexual orientation of a host on another network? Rachel Maddow has the dignity and honesty to tell the truth about who she is… if only the same thing were true for all of the self-hating right wing closet cases who populate Fox News and the the RNC
Comment by terje — September 9, 2008 @ 12:43 pm
JFK, McCain has to first know HOW to go forward. America looks different than it did in 1950. As for you going to McCain's side, please, stay there.

about Pork Palin being against earmarks! He
wont tell you that when he put out his famous
list of wasteful earmarks, under his own name
on his own stationary, there were Pork Palin
projects mentioned by name on his list. My
point about McCain is, this ain't no straight
talk, and my point about Barack is, he should
call McCain on this….big time. Stay tuned.

Ok, I know republicans are seldom capable of reasoning through any argument longer than "Drill here, drill now," so I'll make this as simple as possible.
You have been lied to about Obama's tax policy. (Or you simply choose to lie about it, but let's give you the benefit of the doubt.)
In fact Obama's policy will *lower* your taxes unless you make more than $250,000 a year.
But this country *does* need to raise taxes because the Republicans have already SPENT the money we need to raise taxes to pay for.
You see, when you're a grown up, you actually have to pay for all the pretty glittery toys you want at the toy store.
The Bush administration has been responsible for the largest DEBT in world history. The rest of us have to pay off America's DEBT.
By the way, this DEBT unless it is paid off, will CRIPPLE America (and is already doing so, but since Republicans don't give a damn about America, I guess that doesn't really bother you, does it?)
Since it was the richest 0.1% who benefitted the most from Georgie's spending like a drunken, well, drunkard and coke abuser, why shouldn't they pay the lion's share of the debt?
I know, I know, you brain turned itself off after the word tax. That's too bad.
When you are capable of actual thought, you can get back to me.

Leave it to FOX to make the truth sound like an insult. I'd love to see Maddow own this by saying, "Yesterday FOX pointed out that I'm a lesbian. And their point is? Are they suggesting something is "wrong" with being gay?" Back FOX into a corner by making them explain exactly what they find so funny/wrong/gross/etc. about being a lesbian, especially when the majority of the general population just doesn't care whether someone's straight or gay. Who knows, it might even wake up some Log Cabin Republicans. On second thought, if the last 8 years didn't wake them up….

I know a bunch of Fox News anchors personally and they're not such bad people individually but they live with blinders on. This should not be tolerated!
BTW, I saw this on the blog of Craig’s List founder, Craig Newmark, yesterday and thought it was a great concept and worth sharing:
"Hey, this is a good example of genuine grassroots democracy:
ObamaTravel.org is a platform that connects volunteers who want to travel to a swing state with financial sponsors and swing state host families. It’s sort of a political hybrid of craigslist and Team-in-Training - volunteers post profiles and solicit sponsorship from their family and friends. Sponsors can see their donations in action by following the activities of their volunteers.
… and let's remember that "community organizing" is pure grassroots democracy."

If irrelevent details of someone's sexual orientations/choices/proclivities is considered worth commenting on, then let's just go all the way with those of every media personality.
What floats their boat? Does Hannity do it with lights out? Does Bill O'Reilly only get excited if the victim resists his bullying advances? Does Rush need ED med to counteract his hillbilly heroin and does he ever manage to get on top without damaging his partner's inernal organs? Exactly where do they prefer to rub their plumbing and how do they like others to use their plumbing on them? Do they masturbate? If so, how and how much? If not, have they always been such goddamned liars?
FOX uses code to try to do damage to the competition/opposition. They are a propaganda outlet and admitted as much (yet are still treated as a "news" org).
Everytime they use language as red meat for their base, it is to saddle their targets with the associated memes.
They might as well say, "Lesbian Air America host, (and all that entails)."

We don't have a war, we have an occupation, a dirty one, that killed many times more civilians than "enemies" (we don't know the difference half the time)
Since war is one of the very few things that gives this country a sense of unity and community, the Neocons have waged the dog in Iraq, to seize power, and stay there by instilling fear.

Last I looked there are no gays running for Prez or VP…
This is a game, the same game that the Obama camp played when they accused the Clintons of being racists. So transparent. Don't you see you are being manipulated??? Now Fox is homophobic?? Not.
The working public, the responsible voters, the young an impressionable, the easily swayed, are vulnerable. They can't see the road when people keep muddying up the windshield.

awful, a real hatchet speech, nasty, ugly,

The AP has reported that Sarah Palin collected in excess of $17,000.00 in per diem while living at home and in excess of $43,000.00 for family travel expenses.
Apparently she spent in excess of 300 days at home instead of at the capitol. That would mean she's been in her office less than half the time she's been in office.
her defense so far seems to consist of the statement that her predecessor Frank Murkowski spent hundreds of thousands more.

What has kept me posting comments on this blog since it only Rosencrans, Igor and me, is to try to balance the continuing disregard for the truth by Rosencrans and Igor.
I don't have any illusions about them suddenly changing their continuing disnformation campaign.
After all, we are fighting against the team that lied us into the invasion of Iraq at a cost of over 1,000,000 Iraqi deaths and 4155 of our fellow citizens.
What's a little lie about Obama being a Muslim or Palin selling the jet on EBay or about Olbermann's ratings?
If your prepared to stand behind the Big Lie, the little ones are probably easy.
Comment by smilinjack — September 9, 2008 @ 9:18 pm
Subroutine, please, talk about her, get all your comrades in arms to talk about her, raise hell about her, make her the focal point of the campaign. It's very important for you to use precisely the term you used to describe her because women just LOVE that term. As you can see, talking about her produced great results for the Obama campaign, especially as far as women's votes are concerned, so to win Barack just needs more of the same.

When Olbermann was fired by Fox News, Robert Murdoch stated flatly, "He's crazy." Apparently some of his supporters gloss over the fact his ratings rarely get out of the basement. That's not a lie. That's a fact. Here's a link where you can review his ratings. Also, both Olbermann and O'Reilly had interviews with Obama. O'Reilly got 4.9 million viewers while Olberman got 1.9 million, almost double his normal viewership. Anyway, Olbermann has Attention Deficit Disorder because he thinks the world is interested in his personal one dimensional hatred of Bush. Olbermann, your station owners should wake up. You and Chris Matthews, another liberal pile of sludge in the media sewer pipe, are both high fiving each other on the way to the bottom. By the way, read some of the comments below the ratings. Are all those people lying Brent? It occurs to me that only a pyschopath would label someone a liar simply for disagreeing with them. Especially when the facts are on their side.

BTw the latest Sarah Palin, it turns out
she was billing the taxpayers of Alaska
for per diem allowances while she was in
her own home! This is amazing, no shame,
no maverick, no reformer this person. Time
to add up her take. If I did this to a
client, they'd call the sheriff. Nice work
if you can get it. Meanwhile both ABC and
NBC network news tonite reported various
matters in "the Sarah Palin story" that
were not exactly accurate. Her bogus position
on earmarks which she always supported. How
she hired the big pork lobby firm. How she
supported the bridge to nowhere. Starting
to finally be reported. I did two radio shows
tonite, Cliff Kelly in Chicago and Richard
Greene on Air America and one point I raised
is that folks who want to have an impact can
write letters to the editor and call local
TV news bureaus putting out the word about
the truth to reach the people.

[...] Posted by Rick on September 9, 2008 Never mind the fact that I think very highly of Rachel Maddow and think she is incredibly insightful and has a razor sharp wit. The fact of the matter is that the Fox News personality attacking Maddow for being a lesbian is a disgusting person who has no business being on America's airwaves, let alone a "news" show. But what a surprise… Faux news found this acceptable. Thus, a "Moron of the Moment" nod to both Fox Noise and Tim Graham. Fox News Attacks ‘Lesbian Air America Host’ Brent Budowsky [...]
Pingback by A descpicable Momo « One Little Victory — September 10, 2008 @ 12:17 am
Rachel Maddow is openly and proudly lesbian, she is an Air America host, and her show on MSNBC does, in fact, move the network further to the left. So nothing Tim Graham said in his segment with Fox News was factually inaccurate or even much of a revelation, and although his derogatory inflection of the word "lesbian" was boorish and objectionable, there was nothing in the segment that even remotely qualified as hate speech. (The FoxNews personnel, let's note, chose not to follow up on Graham's use of the word "lesbian." That's about as close as a network anchor can come to disapproval without violating protocol.)
Budowsky's initial post is fundamentally misleading, and would probably flunk Journalism 101.
Comment by Tim Hulsey — September 10, 2008 @ 12:28 am
Fox News is trying to marginalize Rachel Maddow and eventually force her off the air. They've done this stuff so many times before.

When there is nothing they can objectively report then they fall back to attack mode.
Seems someone should bring up what a hypocrite McCain is. Doesn't he espouse family values? Then what about his values? How he came back from Vietnam, found his wife disfigured from an auto accident, started running around on her, had adulterous relationship with Cindy, divorced his wife and married Cindy less than a month later, etc, etc. How could anyone vote for a war mongering womanizer????

First of all, Jim, with all due respect, I
really dont care what you think. I stated
a fact in quotation marks that was a direct
quote specifying what Fox said, word for
word, accurately and with exact detail, about
Maddow. Has nothing to do with my bias, facts
are facts, and if you dont like it, good luck
to you. More interestingly all three networks
last night and the Washington Post front page
this morning listed the various lies McCain
and Palin told about Palin's record. Issue
by issue. Fact by fact. Lie by lie. Same
points I have been making for a week on this
site, others, and on talk radio. Obama made
a big mistake letting this go for ten days
without adequate truth telling and the media,
as expected, let the lies go forth without
any correction for ten days, until now. Lets
watch this play out. The fight has only

Rachel Maddow is more intelligent than almost anyone on the air today. Keith Oberman is as well. Msnbc should be ashamed of demoting them. They need not play that game!! I figured Rachel is a lesbian, my only question was whether she is an actual registered democrat or whether she was some sort of Green party being.
I stumbled upon Keith and Rachel last night quite by accident, I looked at the ratings and my guess is that the same people that can make it through Keith's show will also enjoy Rachel's show, they'll certainly notice Keith's estrogen level is higher.

America is divided many ways. This sort of ugliness reflects just one of the schisms. Public displays of intolerance motivates the base of intolerants.
That's why the advice given to Obama to learn to fight back is so critical. He should not show "anger"; that's truly bad advice. But he needs to denounce intolerance, bigotry, lying, and other below-the-belt Republican tactics. We know he can take a punch; can he throw one? We know he doesn't get mad; can he get even?
Please, Bill Clinton, teach the tyro how to fight gutter tactics without getting dirty himself. That would make tomorrow's a real power lunch.

It is really a shame that the posters here are consumed with hate. You live in one of the greatest countries in the world with the highest standard of living ever witnessed on earth, and you complain. You are so smug in your rightousness to come on a blog and defame and insult. I saw the FOX news story Budowsky talks about and there were no "smug laughs and happy chortles." He made that up. And, yes, Graham called her a lesbian, which is no secret, but I've heard President Bush and other called much, much worse, including the comments on this blog. Typical Liberals. Make up a lie and then take affront because you know the other haters will join in. Liberals will say, or do anything, even foster hate, to advance their corrupt causes. As usual, they remain ridiculous hypocrites. One person complains about the phony outing of Cheney's daughter, then another says that the Lesbian talk show host just happens to be the truth.
Obviously, the label for the talk show host was meant to be disparaging.
And the right wingers don't seem to get it that being a lesbian talk show host should be just another person. But to Fox News, that means she is not a rich, white, male which is their target propaganda audience… (as well as stupid poor whites)

First, Rachel is a big girl and she can take care of herself. But, that comment is a cheap shot. Even in the NFL people generally avoid cheap shots until someone else cheap shots first. Rachel, feel free to take them out at the knees.
Second, that doesn't excuse FOX's hate mongering and their blatant appeal to the lowest common denominator in our society. What does it matter that Rachel is a lesbian. So what, she openly admits in her Air America bio that her partner is a woman. This isn't news.
Thirdly regardless of her sexual orientation Rachel is one hell of a journalist and a very intelligent woman. So intelligent that it's scary sometimes. Maybe that is FOX's real problem. Rachel has them on basic intelligence and intellect and the only way they can fight back is to hit below the belt.
As for Obama, he needs to fight back and fight back hard against the Republicans. McCain and Palin are taking cheap shots and it's time that Obama defend himself. Barack needs to go our for blood now that the gauntlet has been thrown down. It's a knife fight and Barack has to win. Forget the another four years of George Bush, just think of what it will be like with four years of the Republicans' two clowns.
Obama it's time to send McCain to a rest home and Palin into the wilds to eat more moose stew (it tastes like crap). The US can't afford another four years of Republican policies.
Barack, you've played rope a dope long enough. You've let McCain punch himself out. It's time to come out with a knock out combination.

Hmmm….
"The saying is usually meant to convey putting the best possible face on a bad situation. Torie Clarke, Donald H. Rumsfeld's press secretary at the Pentagon — a Republican and a woman — named her book 'Lipstick on a Pig: Winning in the No-Spin Era by Someone Who Knows the Game.' And McCain himself used the phrase late last year to describe Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's plan for universal health care.
"'I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig,' McCain said of the plan last October as Clinton was running for the Democratic nomination."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/09/AR2008090903531.html
Meanwhile, back on 1 Feb 2007, in two separate instances, McCain used the expression again:
"It gets down to whether you support what's being done in this new strategy or you don't. You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig in my view."
Again , on NPR:
"It's all about withdrawal or not withdrawal, okay? I mean that's what it's all about. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
McCain in his full display of class!
Shoe, have you met the other foot yet?
Comment by Jim — September 11, 2008 @ 1:10 am
Brent,
Tell us honestly. Just two short weeks ago, you praised Obama for his Presidential caliber decision of picking another Presidential material, Joe Biden. It's clear that had Obama picked Hillary, there would have been no Palin and race would have been over. No, Biden is irrelevant, nowhere to be found. Obama is afraid of his own shadow, timid, lost, first being ridiculed as celebrity, then having that celebrity status stolen as soon as Greek Temple was gone and Sarah appeared from its ashes.
Hillary is playing it very smart, not criticizing Sarah Palin, waiting for Obama to self destruct, according to master plan for 2012. Given Obama's mediocre performance in recent interviews, McCain has a good chance to score even in debates, while Sarah evaporates Biden with her natural style, openness, down to Earth profile.
Why aren't Al Gore and Bill Clinton helping Obama? The big Michelle Obama cannot even take a stage now that Sarah Palin is sucking up all the oxygen.
What next for Obama? I am very worried, Brent

You really shouldn't believe all you hear from Hannity. McCain's bones were broken in his landing, and they totalled 3 (three).
"McCain was severely injured, having broken both arms and his right leg, and
his strength in coping through his recouperation was inspiring to many of

The problem with folks like you is that you want a good story, a Rambo flick, an underdog turned bionic man plot, a superhero story where the downtrodden POW with "all of his bones broken" by the bad guys (I think McCain prefers the racial slur "gooks") swoops into DC like a caped crusader and saves the day. And damned be the facts if they get in the way of your good story.

Jim Ross, Jon Pemberton, and Igor R., (together with the rest of their ilk) are such pathetic damn liars and losers, it's hard even to fathom.
From FactCheck.org (wire.factcheck.org/2008/09/10/pigs-and-pit-bulls/):
Pigs and Pit Bulls
The McCain camp has put out a Web ad painting Obama as “ready to smear.”
Palin: Do you know they say, the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.
Obama: But you know, you can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.
Couric: One of the great lessons of that campaign is the continued and accepted role of sexism in American life.
[Title: Ready to lead? No. Ready to smear? Yes.]
Let’s start with what the ad gets right. It does seem to be true that Republican v.p. candidate Sarah Palin wears lipstick. And it’s true that she mentioned this particular cosmetic choice at the convention, when she joked that lipstick is the only difference between a hockey mom and pit bull, as the ad shows before it goes completely off the rails. If this were a CoverGirl commercial, we’d be all set.
But it’s not; it’s a political ad. And it goes on to imply that Obama made a personal dig at Palin, calling her a “pig,” and that commentators decried his sexism for derailing the campaign. This is bunk. Let’s look at what Obama actually said at a campaign rally in Virginia:
Obama, Sept. 9: John McCain says he’s about change too. And so I guess his whole angle is, watch out, George Bush — except for economic policy, healthcare policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics, we’re really going to shake things up in Washington. That’s not change. That’s just calling some, the same thing something different. You know, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.
Here’s what the McCain campaign heard, according to ABC News’ Jake Tapper:
Tapper, Sept. 10: Asked why she was so confident Obama was “comparing” Palin to a pig, [former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, on behalf of the McCain campaign,] said Palin was the only one of the four candidates on both parties’ tickets who wears lipstick.
“She is the only one of the four candidates for president or the only vice presidential candidate who wears lipstick,” Swift said. “I mean it seemed to me a very gendered comment.”
But, Swift added, if “as part of his apology Senator Obama wants to say no he was calling Senator McCain — who is a true hero in our country a pig — then I suppose we could wait en masse for an apology to that as well.”
For starters, Swift is ignoring the fact that “putting lipstick on a pig” is a hoary old expression of the same caliber as “building a better mousetrap” or “letting the cat out of the bag.” We did a quick Nexis search on uses of the expression before Tuesday, and found 2,290 instances dating back to 1985 (which is as far back as most Nexis news goes). Its meaning is precisely what Obama was talking about in his speech: calling the same thing something different. Context for the phrase in the last two decades ranged from health care to taxes to fashion to business to, uh, pig racing. It has tumbled from the lips of sports commissioners, librarians and company spokesmen, but it’s particularly popular with politicians. (Congressional newspaper The Hill even featured the phrase in its “Congress Speak” column.) It’s been spotted as far away as New Zealand. It’s even the title of a book by former McCain press aide Torie Clarke.
As several people (including Tapper, Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic, Ben Smith at Politico, the Obama campaign and some of our readers) have pointed out, John McCain employed the phrase in 2007, in talking about Hillary Clinton’s health care plan: “I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” Oh, and he also said it about Iraq war strategy – if it’s really a personal smear, it’s not clear who’s wearing the lipstick in that example. Obama has used the expression before, too (also in referring to Iraq strategy). But before either McCain or Obama speculated on porcine cosmetics, members of Congress from Rick Santorum to Ted Kennedy had been talking pig lips for years.
If the McCain campaign wants to get literal, ignoring the expression’s long political pedigree, they could go whole hog (as it were) and look at what Obama actually said. He is talking about John McCain’s policies, not about his running mate. “Barack Obama on Sarah Palin”? Not at all.
And “Katie Couric on this election”? Well, it depends on what your definition of “this” is. Couric was referring to the Hillary Clinton campaign, long before Palin was tapped for v.p. Hey, remember when McCain called Clinton’s health plan “lipstick on a pig”?

Shorter Jim P. and John Pemberton: "How dare you criticize John McCain? Don't you know he was a POW?"
Even McCain realizes he's worn out the POW thing. I think he finally jumped the "noun, verb, POW" shark on that when he tried to deflect questions about forgetting whether he had 7, 8 or 12 houses. "I'll have my staff get back to you on that one… by the way, did you know I was a POW?"
He's on to a new shtick now. You might consider the same.

"I'm not going to accept you answering a question with a question."
Aww, Jon throws a Republican tantrum. Shocking… LOL

I predict those on the left and Brent will use the truncated "God" quote from Palin's interview. And, they will portray that the "Bush Doctrine" means a single thing, which it does not.

Jessy T, (moron in training)
The 9/11 attack took nearly 2 years of planning, most of it while Bill Clinton was bombing Yugoslavia to let Muslims have their own little state in Europe. While 9/11 took place under Bush, in the last 7 years our military, FBI, CIA and other security agencies neutralized hundreds, perhaps thousands of potential attacks, yet all Democrats can talk about is "it happened on his watch". Elect Obama, let him relax security, put FBI and CIA on a short leash to protect the rights of his "brothers" and let's see what happens.

Didn't I ask you to tell me McCain's economic plan? That's not demonstrating a closed mind at all. Your refusal to answer what should be a basic question appears to indicate one of the following:
1) Your candidate has no plan.
OR
2) You blindly support someone whose plans you don't know.
Hmmmm. Neither one of those look good for you. Better let charity begin at home, Jon.

Yes you said that in answering a question I had about Obama's. Answering a question with a question. Round and round we go.
I'll pray for you..

You're welcome to pray, Jon, if it makes you feel like you're doing something productive. We each find our own niche in life, no matter how ironic it may seem to others.

Why, thank you! I'm not Keith, of course, but thanks for the compliment.
I notice you have nothing to say about the nonpartisan FactCheck.org's smackdown of the Rove-Schmidt-McCain-Palin "Mommy! Barack Called Me A Pig!" shtick. Or about the fact that even McCain has given up on the "How dare you mention how many houses I have, or how ignorant I am about the economy? Don't you know I was a POW?" shtick.
Thanks for the compliment anyway.

Oh there are two nuts out there? Just kidding.
Honestly, you should think about thinking objectively. Take you democratic wig off and let the air hit the scalp…
McCain offers you the privilegde of living in a country he will lead with experience, and thoughtfulness. He is not about getting his name in the history books.
