Early Voting in NYC (Ryan J. Davis)

@ 6:26 pm

I waited over an hour to vote in New York City today. The Board of Elections has had such a large turnout, they've had to extend their office hours this week to 9 p.m. One of the poll workers told me that she's never seen anything like this in "all her years." She wasn’t young.

Four years ago, when I voted early for John Kerry, it only took 10 minutes and there didn't seem to be much excitement in the room. Today, the elevator was packed with people talking about where they were heading for Election Day. In one car alone we had people heading to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire.

Obama's grassroots organization is on a different scale than any campaign prior. He has set a new gold standard.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.

  1. Leaving the polls open after 3PM just favors Obama, and it's not fair. Leaving the polls open after 3PM just attracks rif-raf to vote; blue collar workers and homeless people.

  6. Yes, Ryan. Obama's grassroot organization is world class. In one day you can vote in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire after you finished voting in NYC.

The reason for this enthusiasm is an obvious one - redistribution of wealth. From those with initiative, persistence, brains and risk taking to those who vote for Obama. In other words from those with abilities to those with needs. Gold standard of Marxism.

  8. Campbell Brown: Obama breaks his promise
    CNN ^ | campbell brown

(CNN) — You may have heard that Wednesday night Barack Obama will be on five different TV networks speaking directly to the American people.

He bought 30 minutes of airtime from the different networks, a very expensive purchase. But hey, he can afford it. Barack Obama is loaded, way more loaded than John McCain, way more loaded than any presidential candidate has ever been at this stage of the campaign.

Just to throw a number out: He has raised well over $600 million since the start of his campaign, close to what George Bush and John Kerry raised combined in 2004.

Without question, Obama has set the bar at new height with a truly staggering sum of cash. And that is why as we approach this November, it is worth reminding ourselves what Barack Obama said last November.

One year ago, he made a promise. He pledged to accept public financing and to work with the Republican nominee to ensure that they both operated within those limits.

Then it became clear to Sen. Obama and his campaign that he was going to be able to raise on his own far more cash than he would get with public financing. So Obama went back on his word.

He broke his promise and he explained it by arguing that the system is broken and that Republicans know how to work the system to their advantage. He argued he would need all that cash to fight the ruthless attacks of 527s, those independent groups like the Swift Boat Veterans. It's funny though, those attacks never really materialized.

  9. I've been an ardent McCain supporter for 22 years. Palin was, admittadly, a mistake. She is trying to trash a POW, decorated veteran. Palin lied to the McCain campaign, and made herself seem much more qualified. We were jerked around. Now palin reies to blame McCain. That is evil , and now I know what "neocon" means.

you are brainwashed into thinking there is something wrong w/ Palin… the msm got to you… palin is the best example of what true american values are. respect for others, respect for the unborn, respect for religion, and respect for work.

    you are clueless.

    Comment by JFK-HRC — October 28, 2008 @ 11:45 pm

  11. #9. I live in Arizona too, and Johnnie boy picked Palin with no vetting. She's out of her league and it's HIS fault. Stop making excuses for someone whose claim to fame was over 40 years ago. He had admiration as a veteran and POW. He's also a philanderer, ruthless, a gambler, erratic, and a war monger. I'm glad the Obama voters are coming out even in Arizona to make it closer than ever. This Arizonian is for Obama/Biden and they will win!!

  12. Anna, "Aeizona" must be one those 57 states Obama visited. I'm glad you now know what "neocon" means. I now know what a "stupid impersonator of a Republican" means.

  14. "As spiritual leaders signing this letter we are stepping forward to say: "We can make a difference" As our spiritual practice empties, opens and strengthens us, we are naturally moved to engage in the world with compassion, equanimity, and the dedication to live our values.

We know many of you are already both concerned and
involved in this year's Presidential election. Yet, in the past weeks, many of us have heard friends in the spiritual community expressing ambivalence about voting. When asked why they wouldn't vote we heard things like: "It doesn't make any difference"; "I'm more interested in spiritual practice than politics".

This election, we have an opportunity to create a paradigm shift in the nature of politics. Senator McCain has voted with President Bush over 90% of the time leading to policies that have increased violence the world, furthered environmental destruction, tried to force religious views on the country, and shown a staggering lack of compassion for those most in need.

Play a role in bringing peace and justice back to the planet.

Vote for Barack Obama on November 4.

If you allow yourself to envision the world as it could be rather than the world as it is, what would it look like?

And more importantly, what would you be willing to do to help create that world?

Americans all accross this country realize we need fundamental change, radical change if we are to survive and thrive as a country. Barack Obama has brought many people together, such as Republicans who have never voted for Democrats, Newspapers who usually endorse Republicans, Generals, world leaders and a whole host of people who realize that we have an opportunity in this great leader to fundamentally bring about positive and holistic change, just not America but the world.

  16. It's amazing how the left fear Sarah Palin. The reason they fear her the most is because she has values.

    Comment by Robert Rosencrans — October 29, 2008 @ 10:59 am

  17. No, Sarah Palin doesn't have values. McCain could have taken a more qualified candidate. She scares me with her hockey mom references and her 150K wardrobe. She's speaking out of both sides of her mouth. There were other qualified females. We moderates do not trust her.

  19. Amazing all these people who think "spreading the wealth around" means Obama wants to lift the Spam from their trailor cupboards in order to give it to inner-city kids.

Get real, folks. A QUARTER of a MIL is not only NOT what YOU make; it's more than you can hope for. No one wants your pitiful pennies.

    Comment by Pal-O-Mine — October 29, 2008 @ 12:20 pm

  20. Sarah Palin has "values": yeah, like shifting campaign money into her closet, lying about her "bridge to nowhere", slandering her opponents instead of arguing with them, laughing at the notion of civil rights for prisoners, shooting animals, and forcing her pregnant daughter to get married.
    Nice.

I have values too: I think you should argue fairly without petty slander, I think "kill him" warrents a remprimand, I think prisoners must have rights so that we can make sure we aren't torturing anyone, I think shooting animals is brutal and ugly, and I think misuse of camapaign money is criminal.

    Comment by Pal-O-Mine — October 29, 2008 @ 12:33 pm

  21. The brainwashing of the GOP is almost as successful as Obama's grass-roots campaign. Did Obama change his mind on financing? Yes. Ok, fine. How many things has John McCain said 6 months ago, that he now flip flops on? How about Palin saing she IS a feminist when talking to Katie Couric, then a while later says she doesn't like "labels" when talking to Brian Williams…

I want a leader who has a consistant message. I want a leader that offers a plan and doesn't just attack the "other one". I want a leader with fresh ideas, not to mention a fresh brain. McCain couldn't even remember one of his closest advisors names on Meet the Press! Are you kidding me?

At this point, I feel only Joe the Idiot would vote for McCain. Obabma is NOT a terrorist, he is NOT a socialist, he is NOT going to steal from the rich and give to the poor. He's just evening the playing field so that the MIDDLE CLASS (hey joe idiot, listen up) can survive. Without the middle class, this country will fall apart. And that means all the hard working Americans will have even less to cling to.

    Comment by lets get real — October 29, 2008 @ 1:33 pm

  22. Pal-O-Mine, your post was highly respectful of lower middle class voters, that's just great! As you know Obama has recently lowered the quarter mil to 200K and the Biden did him one better and lowered it to 150K. Considering Obama clearly broke his recent promise on accepting public financing, who is to say the trend isn't taking all of this straight into the trailer demographic?

    Comment by Igor R. — October 29, 2008 @ 2:36 pm

  23. My post was definitely NOT respectful: it was sarcastic. Duh.

Obama lowered nothing: rumors are rampant and hysterical: and, need I say, pitiful.

The whole idea of raising upper-income taxes and not lower-income taxes is to make sure that everyone's bearing the same RELATIVE weight.

Folks who don't get that are dreaming that they'll be making a szt-load and they are protecting their fantasy honey-pots: how pathetic is that? When self-interest is mired in fantasy, then no one is really on anyone's side.

    Comment by Pal-O-Mine — October 29, 2008 @ 2:55 pm

  24. Pal-O-Mine! You give it to 'em.

They're fighting what's to their pathetic advantages based on arm-chair day dreams.

Pal is right: no one's asking for a higher percentage of your teeny tiny incomes. Get real. You get to keep all your crummy crappp AND MORE!

  27. The Amount of time McCain spent as a POW defending this country is about twice as long as the amount of experience Obama has in Govt. I actually like Obama but I think its sick that you have a bunch of ignorant minorities chanting his OBAMA 08 and do not have a clue to any of his policies, if jay-z ran he would get even more votes.

    Comment by Sgt P USMC — October 31, 2008 @ 2:22 pm

  28. You McCain supporters are so bitter

    Comment by Tony — November 1, 2008 @ 3:31 pm

  29. "Ignorant Minorities"…wow…
Great choice of Vocabulary…Why do the Obama supporters have to be "ignorant". Last time I heard everyone was entitled to an opinion. Also, I didn't know that being a POW gave you EXPERIENCE to run for the presidency…I thought it had to do with something like education or achievemants. Isn't the president supposed posess that certain je ne sais quoi… Well gosh-darnit I must've been under some rock, huh!

If you ask me (I know, you didn't…), Mccain's probably going to use his prisoner of war EXPERIENCE to just relive his "glory" days and maybe throw some retaliation in there somewhere, he's probably always wanted his own POW. If you really want to talk about ignorance…let's discuss SOME of these Mccain SUPPORTERS. Please next time we waste film on these sub-primes (haha get it) someone ask them to give you the defnition of communism, socialism, even terrorist for that matter,FIRST. If they answer correctly then they may proceed to the next question. It not fair to McCain's Campaign to showcase the ILLITERATI (get it? no? I'm sorry…) Most of the blatant disrespect to Americans' intelligence has come from Mccain Supproters. Now I don't hate the guy but I feel his advisors, his running mate, his supporters and HIM have royally f*cked up the Republican campaign…that's just my OPINION. Probably a few out there who agree with me.

Oh, yeah anyone who can honestly say that Palin is the WOMAN for the job, please, don't play yourself. You're DELUSIONAL and you KNOW it..hell I'm not a government official but I can tell you what I read/watch for information. TIME, WIRED, AL JAZEERA ENGLISH, NEW YORK TIMES, AP, FOX, COSMO, DR. SEUSS….

    Let's get it together people….
