Sarah the Washington Insider (Bob Franken)

@ 12:10 pm

At first I was astounded at the talk of Sarah Palin laying the groundwork for her own presidential run in the future. After all, if John McCain does lose, there is ample evidence part of the blame will rest on her and the seemingly impetuous, make that desperate, decision to choose her as his running mate. Polls show she evolved from sudden sensation into a drag on the ticket, widely perceived as a telegenic scatterbrain who was selected for a lot of wrong reasons.

The more I think about it, though, the more I am reminded that when it comes to politicians, we Americans have the collective memory of a gnat. To put it another way, Gov. Palin will have plenty of time for us to forget why it was she so enhanced the career of Tina Fey.

Instead of "Gov." Palin, think "Sen." Palin. That becomes more plausible when we think Sen. Stevens, as in Ted Stevens. He's now been convicted, but he's still running for reelection.

Under this scenario, Palin would devoutly hope Stevens wins. Then, as the legal walls start slowly collapsing and as his Senate friends turn their backs on him, he will sooner or later resign.

By now, you know what's next. Under Alaska law, the governor appoints an interim replacement until the state's voters choose someone to fill out the term.

Now just who might that interim appointment be? Let's see. Could it be SARAH PALIN!!? Would she appoint herself in the hope that it would give her a leg up in the special election?

There are certainly reasons to think so. For starters, the United States Senate would be a terrific school for her remedial civics courses. She could learn all about current events without really doing any harm.

Not only that, but Washington does have a Nieman Marcus store. For that matter, there are some really snazzy consignment shops for her "maverick" moments. It gets better. The area is crawling with makeup artists, who can help with the lipstick when she goes to hockey games. Did I mention we have an NHL team?

You can see why this is so plausible. I don't even have to mention that the tundra here is usually not frozen. There are so many advantages. D.C. has a ton of therapists, for example, plenty of professionals who can help anyone who believes this is some crazy fantasy.

It definitely is not. Stranger things have happened in the wild and wacky world of politics. In fact, they usually do. You betcha.

If, for some reason, this doesn't play out, she could always become a fellow pundit. You certainly don't need any particular knowledge to do this. Just a vivid imagination.

  1. You are not crazy, I had a similar thought this morning. Only I thought it would be a good thing to do.

  2. I guess it proves that the lack of intellect doesn't stop some people having a huge ego.
In fact ego is probably the route cause of many of Mrs Palin's dishonest shenanigans…

  3. I've said this before: You have a better chance of seeing this piece of trailer trash naked in a magazine than ever seeing her on a national ticket

  5. Palin will go to Fox News or talk radio, or something similar for the right wing crackpots to see and listen to.

Sarah Palin expensively clothed or naked is a nightmare .

  8. People, some here, mistakenly confuse intelligence with education. You CAN have one without the other. Though I'm feeling ho-hum about the Republican ticket this year, I do think she has the intelligence to learn (not necessarily as VP)and perform well. As for the trailer trash comments, Bill Clinton's background would certainly qualify him as "trailer trash". In any case, by voting for Obama, you're really voting blindfolded due to the lack of information allowed out for public view. I've never seen a more carefully controlled and scripted campaign than he is conducting. What is known makes me very nervous and what is not even more so.

  9. Bill Clinton isn't standing for office. Sarah Palin is.
I never saw Bill Clinton do anything stupid while he had his pants up. So far no one has seen Sarah Palin do anything intelligent no matter how she was dressed.
Bill Clinton's daughter is a Stanford graduate. Sarah Palin's daughter is a seventeen year old knocked-up high-school drop out.
Some people live in mobile homes others are trash no matter where they live.
By the way, John McCain has run the most scurillous campaign since Bush senior.
If a man who obviously has no principles doesn't make you nervous you just aren't paying attention.

  11. pgh, yes tell it to the most admired governor in the country (that is before she dared to go national and was given the "joe the plumber" treatment by the national press).

  12. As a veteran educator with advanced degrees, I am astounded that Bob Franken has a "pundit" job. His article has nothing of substance and much of which he has no real
knowledge. Quite possibly Gov. Palin has as much education as does he and many people who continue to denigrate her qualifications. At this point in history, we need someone who believes in the Constitution as written, not as a "living" document. We need someone who does not "owe her soul to the company store". We need someone who tells the truth, unlike Joe "gaffe" Biden and Barry "Ayers, Wright" Obama. We need someone like Governor Sarah Palin and John McCain.

  13. #12. Let me guess; your white and older and a wee bit angry. No wonder our education system has failed miserably here in the US. You have advanced degrees in education, yet you feel Sarah Palin is qualified to be Vice President, and perhaps President. Duh!!!

    Comment by Joyce — October 30, 2008 @ 12:06 am

  14. "Duh!!!" From the famous cartoon which my students enjoy? Indeed, our education system has failed miserably. Fortunately not all my education was in public schools. I am next to youngest of 8 children, 4 of whom worked our way through a tough private college.

Not until the Bush/Kennedy "No Child Left Behind" program did many public school districts even test students to evaluate if they were learning what was supposedly being taught. And most educators fought it every step of the way — unlike me.

But politically, the question is: "Is Barack Obama qualified to be President of the United States?" It doesn't matter if he is white, black, yellow, or red. He is extremely arrogant and naif to have been in the U.S. Senate 143 days when he decided he had enough experience to lead the free world.

But most pundits have fallen in love with him due to the fact that he is young, black, and glib — somewhat like a younger Bill Clinton. Unfortunately, there is no more of substance in what he says than in the article upon which we are commenting. His choice of running mate, Joe "gaffe" Biden further demonstrates his lack of judgment.

A lot of people will be surprised if Obama is elected and he shows his true political colors: Ayers, Wright, Frank Marshall Davis, Khalidi, etc.

Too bad former congressman J.C. Watts or Dr. Condelezza Rice did not run for President! My husband & I, both veteran educators, were not supporters of Sen. McCain, but we became excited when he chose Gov. Palin because of her stand on issues. And we highly respect McCain for his service to our country.
