You Were Wrong About Obama, But Right About Clinton (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 9:47 am

When we asked in our latest Quick Poll! which Democrat would win the Iowa caucuses, 47% of respondents picked former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.), 35% chose Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), and 19% thought the victor would be Sen. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.).

As the world knows this morning, Clinton did indeed trail in third place, but Edwards was only fractionally ahead of her and the state now belongs to Obama, who won handily with 38%.

And so, on to New Hampshire.

Does Huckabee Have Enough of the Big Mo? (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 1:49 pm

Four weeks ago, voters in our Quick Poll! said Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) would win the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire. Call me naive, but I doubt that will happen.

On to Iowa — and the issue of whether former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas can win. He has surged in the polls, some of which suggest he has displaced former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts as the front runner in the GOP Hawkeye State. What do you think? Scroll down to our latest Quick Poll! and tell us where you think Huckabee will finish.

100,000 or More U.S. Troops in Iraq on Election Day (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 1:34 pm

We wanted you to assess the chances of a significant draw down of American forces in Iraq by the time voters go to the polls next November. We asked: "Will there be fewer than 100,000 US troops in Iraq on Election Day next year?" For a while, voting was fairly close, but in recent days, ballots have come in mostly to the No column. The end result — 67% of you saying there would be 100k or higher, and only 33% expecting big reductions.

Troops Out! - Or Still There? (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 5:17 pm

I've just put up our latest Quick Poll! question: "Will there be fewer than 100,000 US troops in Iraq on Election Day next year?" Scroll down the page and vote. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is contemplating legislation that would give Republican senators electoral cover to change administration policy while not pulling the rug out from beneath President Bush (See story in The Hill, Thursday, Nov 15).

You Reckon Hillary Did Herself a Serious Disservice in Philly. (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 2:59 pm

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) was widely thought to have damaged her presidential chances (while remaining the front runner) with her awkward performance in the Democratic debate in Philly. In our latest Quick Poll!, we asked for your assessment of that damage. You thought it was pretty bad. Here are the results:

Halloween scary: 45%
Minor dent : 36%
Not a scratch : 19%

You Don't Really Think This About Ron Paul (Hugo Gurdon)

@ 1:11 pm

Rep. Ron Paul's (R-Texas) supporters really wanted to make sure their guy came out looking good in our latest Quick Poll! They were surely much more interested in pumping him up than in testing the water. Our question was, "What position will Ron Paul finish in in the New Hampshire primary?" Nearly half of respondents (47%) said Paul would win the primary in the Granite State. Maybe I'm just no good at psephology, but that seems unlikely to me. Here are the results, listing Paul's expected finishing position in the primary and the percentage of respondents who checked that box.

* 1st — 47% of all votes
* 3rd — 17% of all votes
* 2nd — 12% of all votes
* 8th — 7% of all votes
* 5th — 6% of all votes
* 6th — 4% of all votes
* 7th — 4% of all votes
* 4th — 3% of all votes
