Asa for AG (Karen Hanretty)

@ 11:30 am

It’s never too late to start doing the right thing. And so it goes that President Bush still has time to do right by our system of justice and appoint as U.S. Attorney General the man he should have appointed when he chose loyalty to an old friend, Alberto Gonzales, over competency and substance. The right man for the job of America’s Top Cop is Asa Hutchinson — the former congressman from Arkansas who served on the Judiciary and Intelligence committees.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have indicated they want someone at DoJ they can trust and work with, and Hutchinson has a sterling reputation on both sides of the aisle. > Read More

Misreading Goldwater (Karen Hanretty)

@ 11:51 am

When Brent Budowsky managed to weave the arrest of Idaho Senator Larry Craig into yet another diatribe about war in Iraq in his post yesterday, I just rolled my eyes and laughed to myself. Leave it to Budowsky to link bathroom sex and Iraq. He keeps good company with June Thomas, an editor at Slate.com who complained law enforcement should concern itself with finding Osama bin Laden, not men looking to kill time in the men’s room.

Thomas writes, “I’m saying we should focus on finding Osama bin Laden in Waziristan. I think there are laws policemen take way too much pleasure in enforcing, and this one is right on top. How many people challenge (much less win) charges like this?” > Read More

Darn the Luck: Edwards Doesn’t Get Castro Endorsement (Karen Hanretty)

@ 5:05 pm

Poor John Edwards can’t catch a break in his bid for the Democratic Party nomination. The only way he’s able to raise money is by riding Ann Coulter’s coattails, he’s had to give up the $400 haircuts (and it shows), and now it’s being reported that Fidel Castro has written an essay saying Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama would “make a winning combination.”

Just how far left does poor old John have to go to get the Communist leader’s attention?

Here’s the lede from Reuters: “Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro is tipping Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to team up and win the U.S. presidential election. > Read More

Here’s What’s More Troubling Than Sex Scandals (Karen Hanretty)

@ 11:58 am

Oh, that conservative radio hosts were half as embarrassed and repulsed by greedy deeds of GOPers in congress who are under federal investigation for gaming the system and using taxpayer money for personal financial gain as they are today are by the pathetic sexual dalliances of Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) who pleaded guilty to soliciting sex from an undercover officer in an airport bathroom.

Those who defended Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) for phoning the madam of a D.C. prostitution ring will be quick to call for Craig’s resignation.  Public denunciations will grow louder as the story, and salacious details of homosexual acts in public places, unfold.

A close-knit brotherhood of Washington senators who’ve served with Craig over the past decade will express shock at these recently published revelations. > Read More

Great nation needs big dreams (Karen Hanretty)

@ 2:59 pm

“Great people talk about great ideas; average people talk about average ideas; small people talk about other people.” I don’t know where the quote comes from, but the person must have had politics in mind when he/she said it.

Every presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican, should always be armed with at least two or three ideas to convey their great ideas for making America better tomorrow than it is today when speaking to a crowd, the media or a stranger on the street. Voters have already expressed their displeasure with the direction of the country — we know from poll after poll they are displeased and see plenty in their government that isn’t going right. > Read More

Maliki is a Marked Man (Karen Hanretty)

@ 4:20 pm

When President Bush stands in front of the cameras and tells the world you’re doing a great job, that’s your cue to run for the hills. It means you’re a marked man.   > Read More

So Many Vestiges, So Little Time to Abolish Them (Karen Hanretty)

@ 2:10 pm

Democrats — gotta love 'em. In their panic over a proposed ballot initiative in California that would reapportion the state’s electoral votes by congressional district, they’ve proposed their own ballot language that, had it been law during the 2004 presidential election, would have awarded all of the state’s electoral votes to … George W. Bush.   > Read More

Organized Labor Can't Organize Parade (Karen Hanretty)

@ 9:45 am

It’s official: The parade has been canceled. That’s right, Big Labor can’t seem to organize a parade for, of all things, Labor Day. Or if it did, no one would show up, save a handful of politicians eager to show solidarity — so reports the New York Daily News in its Aug. 16 edition:

“The parade usually draws a flock of politicians eager to be seen supporting labor in the news, but barely any spectators.”  > Read More

Mexico to Reimburse Nevada for Healthcare? (Karen Hanretty)

@ 4:00 pm

The Tucson Citizen, a newspaper in Arizona, has a short, albeit intriguing, article stating that the state’s governor, Janet Napolitano, “is closely watching the results of Nevada’s request that Mexico pay the health care costs of Mexicans living in the state.” > Read More
